BCC Rushes to Complete Mzedi Dumpsite Access Road Ahead Of Rainy Season
Blantyre City Council (BCC) is taking swift action to complete the construction of the Mzedi Dumpsite Access Road within 120 calendar days, aiming to finish before the rainy season begins. This project, part of the Malawi Water and Sanitation Project-1 (MWSP-1) and funded by the World Bank, seeks to alleviate long-standing issues of road blockages and access difficulties due to poor road conditions.
Speaking during a media site visit on Tuesday, 24th September 2024, the Director of Health and Social Services, Mr. Samden Seunda, highlighted the urgency of the project. “The access road will be vital in easing transportation during the rainy season,” he said. “It has been a challenge to access the road due to the muddy and slippery soils, which often made it impossible to transport waste. At times, we had to halt waste dumping operations because of these issues. This project has come at the right time to solve all these problems.”
The access road is expected to improve waste disposal efficiency, prevent delays, and ensure uninterrupted access to the Mzedi Dumpsite year-round, particularly during heavy rains. The 120-day completion target reflects BCC’s commitment to resolving the health and environmental risks posed by uncollected waste during the rainy season.
With the rainy season fast approaching, BCC remains dedicated to completing the project on time, providing much-needed relief to both the city’s waste management teams and nearby communities.
