MAYOR OSMAN LEADS POLIO VACCINATION SUPERVISION IN BLANTYRE

Blantyre City Mayor, His Worship Councillor Isaac Jomo Osman, today supervised the ongoing polio vaccination campaign in Ndirande LEA, Matope and Mbayani Primary Schools, where he also administered the vaccine to a few children.

The campaign, running from 27 to 30 April 2026, targets all children from 0 to less than 10 years old, with a possible extension to ensure that every eligible child is vaccinated.

The age group was broadened following the detection of a polio positive case involving a 7-year-old child in Blantyre.

“Protect every child. Vaccinate against polio,” said Councillor Isaac Jomo Osman.

Speaking during the exercise, the Mayor urged parents and guardians to ensure all eligible children are vaccinated.

Chief Preventive Health Officer Innocent Mvula said the campaign aims to stop the spread of the type 2 poliovirus.

“The overall goal is to interrupt transmission of the type 2 polio virus following its detection in Blantyre through vaccinating all children under 10 years,” said Mvula.

He added that the campaign seeks to vaccinate 6 million children nationwide, including 437,000 children in Blantyre. This will help reduce child mortality, prevent permanent disability, and improve learning outcomes.

This vaccination initiative is supported by UNICEF.
