Sections and Functions

1. Cemetery

Provide grave spaces including grave reservations
Provide grave tracing
Provision of interment services

2. Cleansing

Cleaning and sweeping in streets, markets and public spaces
Waste collection in CBDs, markets and residential areas
Special waste collection from private companies, institutions and industries (fee-based)
Management and maintenance of City Dumpsites
Promoting sustainable waste management through public awareness and partnerships

3. Environmental Health

Environmental and safety inspections in companies, industries and residential areas
Enforcement of National Legislation and Blantyre City By-laws
Providing food handlers training (fee-based)
Pot chlorination in low income areas
Disease prevention awareness campaigns
Disease surveillance and response
Vector, vermin and pest control services for public and private premises

4. Family Health

Medical care for BCC employees and City residents
Under Five, Antenatal and Family Health Services
HIV Testing and Counselling Services
Mobile clinic services
Provision of PrEP, PEP and condom distribution

5. Public Health Laboratory

Medical examinations for food handlers (hotels, lodges, food manufacturers, etc.)
Medical laboratory tests: Malaria RDT & Microscopy, TB tests, urine & stool analysis, blood sugar tests, etc.
Examination of environmental samples such as water

6. Social Welfare & Home Economics

Regulation of CBOs/FBOs, NGOs, ECD/Daycare Centres and CBCCs
Early Childhood Development training for Centre Managers
Linking street children and abuse victims to essential services
Mentorship and economic empowerment for vulnerable groups
Business development training and Home Economics lessons
