Minister commissions highway street lighting
On Monday (20 March 2017) Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa commissioned the Masauko Chipembere Highway street lighting.
The project has cost K450 million and was co-funded by Roads Fund Administration (90%) and Blantyre City Council (10%).
Mayor Wild Ndipo says the lighting of Masauko Chipembere Highway comes as a relief to residents of Blantyre City.
The excitement among the residents is very clear. From the idea of putting street lights to the way the job has been executed including the actual workmanship, it is all plausible, say the Mayor.
He adds that the importance of street lights cannot be overemphasized as the City cannot successfully curb theft and vandalism in the darkness.
Improved street lighting is widely thought to be an effective means of preventing crime and residents in crime-ridden neighborhoods often demand that the lighting be improved and the general expectation is that improved lighting does indeed reduce crime.
More importantly, it increases the quality of life by artificially extending the hours in which it is light so that activities can take place.
