Vacancy: Assistant Plant Operator.

Blantyre City Council invites application for the position of Assistant Plant Operator tenable in the Directorate of Engineering services.

 

REPORTING :               Plant Operator

 GRADE :                   CW 1

 SALARY:                  In line with Terms and Conditions of Services for Blantyre City Council

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Malawi School Certificate of Education. Candidates having a few years of experience in operation and maintenance of sewage pumps and components in addition to having strong analytical, problem-solving, and teamwork skills will have an added advantage

DUTIES

  • Operates and maintains wastewater treatment, sludge processing, and handling equipment.
  • Tends pumps, conveyors, blowers, chlorinators, vacuum filters, and other equipment used to treat wastewater.
  • Coordinates work by scheduling assignments and overseeing the work of other workers within the plant
  • Explains work instructions and adapts, if necessary, pertinent general methods and procedures in order to meet required needs.
  • Provides training to other workers within the plant
  • Collects samples and makes routine chemical analyses of wastewater at various points in the plant process.
  • Cleans and maintain equipment, tanks, filter beds, intake wells and drying beds, and other work areas
  • Skims grease, pumps sludge, and transfers sludge from sludge tanks to drying beds.
  • Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate the flow of wastewater through settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes.
  • Reads and interprets charts, flow meters, and other gauges to determine operating efficiency of equipment.
  • Lubricates pumps, valves, and other equipment; repairs parts where necessary.
  • Prepares the chemicals required for the testing of wastewater.
  • Maintains the surrounding grounds.
  • Maintains logs, records, and reports relative to the work.
  • Requisitions supplies and materials.
  • Respond to emergency calls
  • Conserve resources wherever possible to ensure budgetary integrity and institution’s satisfaction
  • Submit timely reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant and auxiliary equipment.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and its functions.
  • Knowledge of the methods and procedures involved in testing sludge and effluent.
  • Knowledge of current literature and modern techniques in the field of wastewater treatment.
  • Ability to make operating repairs to a wastewater treatment plant and auxiliary equipment.
  • Ability to take and record chemical tests of sludge and effluent.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports relative to the work.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Ability to maintain favorable public relations.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate the wastewater treatment plant activities of a specific work area.
  • Ability to allocate work to other workers.
  • Ability to determine work priorities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to train, direct, and instruct employees.

Physical Working Conditions

The jobs under this position require physically climbing platforms to inspect reactors; handling heavy hoses, pumps, pipes as such the position holder will be to climb high structures and/or ladders, and lift or move heavy objects.

DUTIES

Reporting to the Director of Administrative Services, the      Public Relations Manager performs the following duties:-

 

  • Acts as a mouth piece for the Council on all issues.
  • Facilitates production of the Council’s brochures and magazine to promote awareness on the Council’s services and activities
  • Organises and coordinates press briefings on behalf of the Council
  • Develops annual public relations plans and related budget for the council
  • Identifies and analyzes internal information on Activities and projects being undertaken by the council and make meaningful presentations to the residents
  • Compiles monthly reports for the section
  • Submits proposals on how the Council’s image could be improved.
  • Advises the Council on matters relating to public relations.
  • Coordinates Council functions
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer from time to time.

 

THE PERSON

  • A self-starter with proven working experience in public relations required
  • Proven track record in designing and executing successful public relations campaigns at both a local and national level
  • Strong relationships with both local and national business and industry media outlets
  • Experience in acting as a company spokesperson; comfortable and skilled in both broadcast and print media interviews
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Solid experience with social media including blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Event planning experience

Vacancy: Building Supervisor

Blantyre City Council invites applications for the position of Building Supervisor tenable in the Directorate of Engineering Services at its Engineers Yard at Ginnery Corner

QUALIFICATIONS :

Diploma in Civil Engineering with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience. Those with a National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) Level 2 Certificate should have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience. Serving officers should have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience plus a NCSC Level 2 Certificate. Applicants should not be more than 45 years of age.

DUTIES                 :

(i) Preparing annual estimates of the section.

(ii) Preparing monthly reports

(iii) Preparing weekly programs for maintenance of Council’s

structures.

(iv) Supervising the construction of new Council’s buildings.

(v)  Planning and supervising repairs and maintenance works.

(vi) Advising the Director on material requirements for public functions.

(vii) Supervising the erection and dismantling of temporary structures

for public functions.

(viii) Assessing quality of houses under lease agreement before and after

occupation.

(ix) Supervise a team of artisans in the section

(x) Any other jobs as may be assigned from time to time

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

On 16th November 2021, His Worship Councillor Wild Ndipo, Mayor of the City of Blantyre, welcomed and received the Queen’s Baton at Civic Centre in Blantyre. On 4th November 2021, Blantyre City Council entered into a partnership agreement with the Rotary Club of Limbe, Illovo Malawi, Kips Restaurant. The agreement aims at keeping Blantyre City clean, green and healthy. His Worship Councillor Wild Ndipo, Mayor of the City of Blantrye. signed the partnership agreement on the Council’s behalf.
