Qualifications

Applicants must have a Certificate in Construction from a recognized institution with a minimum of four (4) years supervisory experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates, directs and supervises the work of a large crew, engaged at the evacuation of landfill sites, placement of solid waste, compaction, and covering of daily disposed refuse at a sanitary landfill site;
  2. Enforces state regulations regarding landfill operations;
  3. Supervises the collection of funds for recycling purposes;
  4. Supervises and participates in safety training programs;
  5. Exercises responsibility for the completion of time sheets, activity reports, accident and injury reports, and equipment condition reports;
  6. Analyzes causes of equipment breakdowns to ensure prompt attention to maintenance and repair needs and coordinates activities with the maintenance shop to attain maximum availability of crawler tractors, scrapers, compactors, motor graders, water tankers, and other equipment used in landfill operations.
  7. Maintains regular and reliable attendance.

Qualifications:

A Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a recognised institution plus a full Malawi School Certificate of Education with strong credit passes in Chemistry/Physical Science and Mathematics. Those with any relevant qualification /certificates in a related field will have an added advantage.

Experience

Two (2) or three (3) years considerable experience in the operation of motorized equipment; and must possess and maintain a Driver’s License and a minimum of two (2) years of driving experience after issuance of license.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Operates with some supervision all landfill equipment to include: front-end loader, backhoe, dozer, trash compactors and dump truck and any other related equipment;
  1. Completes daily maintenance checks and prepares required documentation;
  2. Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipment;
  3. Directs traffic or serves as a spotter at the landfill;
  4. Assists with waste inspections; and,
  5. Assists with mulching, and tire shredding operations.

Experience

Performs skilled tasks by independently collecting and organizing product samples for testing and analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Travels to and work on sampling sites (indoors and outdoors)
  2. Prepares and collects samples from worksite
  3. Observes, tracks, and records sample characteristics (including color, texture, shape, size, smell, density, weight, temperature, etc.)
  4. Compares sample to standard model to quickly assess basic quality of sample
  5. Tests samples and confirms that they conform to industry standards
  6. Transports samples to a specialized laboratory for testing if necessary
  7. Ensures sampling machinery and tools are clean and in a workable condition, making any necessary repairs
  8. Monitors and oversees machines that work automatically (auto-counters, sifters, etc.)
  9. Counts, measures, weighs and labels samples as needed
  10. Records sample data and enters it into a document or spreadsheet
  11. Creates and presents detailed reports on sample findings
  12. Reports any irregular findings to superiors
  13. Maintains all sample reports and ensures that they are accurate and up to date

Candidates having two years of experience or above in operation and maintenance of sewage pumps and components in addition to having strong analytical, problem-solving, and teamwork skills will have an added advantage

DUTIES

  1. Operates and maintains wastewater treatment, sludge processing, and handling equipment.
  2. Tends pumps, conveyors, blowers, chlorinators, vacuum filters, and other equipment used to treat wastewater.
  3. Coordinates work by scheduling assignments and overseeing the work of other workers within the plant
  4. Explains work instructions and adapts, if necessary, pertinent general methods and procedures in order to meet required needs.
  5. Provides training to other workers within the plant
  6. Collects samples and makes routine chemical analyses of wastewater at various points in the plant process.
  7. Cleans and maintain equipment, tanks, filter beds, intake wells and drying beds, and other work areas
  8. Skims grease, pumps sludge, and transfers sludge from sludge tanks to drying beds.
  9. Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate the flow of wastewater through settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes.
  10. Reads and interprets charts, flow meters, and other gauges to determine operating efficiency of equipment.
  11. Lubricates pumps, valves, and other equipment; repairs parts where necessary.
  12. Prepares the chemicals required for the testing of wastewater.
  13. Maintains the surrounding grounds.
  14. Maintains logs, records, and reports relative to the work.
  15. Requisitions supplies and materials.

  2. Inspects repair works on old sewer lines and the disconnection of lines, due to the condition or removal of buildings;
  3. Inspects asphalt works, excavation and backfilling of soil; Records location of bends in pipes and location of clean outs;
  4. Keeps file records of dates and time of inspections;
  5. Updates public sewer maps showing new public installations;
  6. Prepares and submits reports concerning sewer applications and inspections; Investigates and reports on public complaints.

Vacancy: Sewarage Engineer (Grade I/M7)

The Local Government Service Commission is inviting applications from suitably qualified Malawians for the following vacancy existing at Blantyre City Council:

Position: Sewarage Engineer (Grade I/M7)

Applicants must be in possession of a Bsc. Degree in Engineering, specializing in Civil, Environmental or Geotechnical disciplines with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a busy industry. Those with a Bsc. Degree with a bias in Chemistry will have an added advantage. Membership to the Chemistry Association of Malawi will also be added advantage.

Job Summary

Handles all technical issues pertaining to the city’s sewer system and ensures proper sludge disposal methods in line with Government regulations.

                Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:-

  1. Periodically conduct wastewater parameter studies to identify and characterize wastewater at various key discharge points in the processing plant with the objective controlling pollutant at source.
  2. Provide workable actions with plant process personnel to curb uncontrolled practice of allowing the pollutant discharging into sewer lines and causing excessive pollutant ended up in WWTP.
  3. Gather and analyse wastewater data to ensure full compliance with Department of Environment (DOE) Standard and to identify potential problems and take pre-emptive corrective actions to ensure the WWTP is always in good operating condition.
  4. Analyse and implement the most cost- effective approach on sludge treatments or disposal methods.
  5. Manage all chemicals and scheduled wastes in the processing plant and WWTP to ensure full compliance with Government Regulations.
  6. Manage the Council’s swage laboratory.
  7. Provide technical direction or supervision to subordinates (engineer, technical personal, operators and lab assistants) on day-to-day operation of WWTP to ensure full compliance to Government Regulations including the following activities:
  8. Control odor emission from WWTP
  9. i) Collect and test samples of sewage, employing analysis standards and testing equipment, to ensure treated water meets DOE standards
  10. i) Inspect machinery and maintain surveillance on operating conditions, gauges and meters to     ensure                 continued efficient operations as well as detect   malfunctions
  11. k) Record and track plant and equipment operational data, including meter and gauge readings, and observe a regular schedule for maintenance and upgrades to prevent system breakdowns
  12. l) Maintain and repair plant equipment to by using both hand and tools
  13. m) Prepare and submit report in compliance to the requirements of Government Agencies

Experience: 
• 3 – 5 years of working experience at WWTP or consultant specializing in WWTP design
